HEALTHIEST SHOES FOR THE GROWING FEET

After three years of development – together with foot health specialists and field testing with the most demanding clients (kids) we came up with a shoe which might well change the way kids´ footwear are produced in the future.

 

 

WHAT HAS BEEN THE PROBLEM UNTIL NOW?

Here is a shocking fact: 98% of the babies are born with perfect feet. By the age of 10 years, 50% of the kids have already developed deformities or other foot problems!!! And when we grow up this percentage goes even higher.

Terrible, isn´t it? However, people in the third world countries have extremely strong and healthy feet. WHY?

 

Because they don´t wear shoes! This is a fact backed by various scientific studies.

In reality, we only need shoes to protect us against extreme temperatures, parasites and sharp objects like broken glass.

Shoes can harm the foot, especially when they are not made to fit the human foot. Unfortunately, the majority of the shoes are just made to fit sales strategies or fashion trends. How many of us suffer?

Kid’s foot differs in anatomy and function from the adult foot. It is wider on toes, and narrowing down towards the heel.

However, the majority of the kids’ shoes are made by downsizing the adult shoe shape – which makes the shoes extremely stiff, heavy, and of wrong shape. Totally inadequate for a small foot.

During the formative years it is very important to look after kid’s developing feet as they easily adopt the shape of a shoe that is too restrictive (narrow in width). Creating problems for the rest of their life… The kid´s bones are mainly soft cartilage until they ossify (harden) by late teens, so even light pressure in wrong place can cause significant alternations in foot anatomy and bone structure.

 

 

 

 

MISSION

So, kid´s shoes requires a design and shape of their own. But no footwear manufacturer has really taken the mentioned facts into account. Our satisfied adult clients – and foot professionals – have been demanding us for correct and healthy shoes for kids, for years. Until now, there was none on the marketplace. We noticed these problems, and started the development work The mission was to create first ever HEALTHY FOOTWEAR FOR KIDS.

We came up with a new design of children footwear that will not hamper their natural foot development.

Compared with “normal” shoes, the Feelmax® shoes are very flexible, light, andvery roomy on toebox – allowing room for the correct foot development without restrictions and letting the foot muscles and tendons get their daily exercise naturally and without additional effort.

 

 

 

Our shoes features an ultrathin and ultra-flexible outsole, which allows the foot to work as Mother Nature intended: with natural movement, but protected.

 

Our shoe construction has been patented. Some of our footwear models feature the world´s thinnest outsole: developed together with world famous tire manufacturerContinental® and made in Germany by them.

Feelmax shoes are much more complicated to produce than “normal” shoes, but we already pose a long track record, reducing the risks associated in this new field. In kid´s shoes, we will use the same proven techniques and materials we currently use in adult´s shoes, to minimize any problems. The materials are tested to be free of harmful or toxic materials – a fact of utmost importance in kid´s footwear.

Not to mention extreme temperatures.

Dr. Lee Bivings, a pediatrician from Atlanta, estimates 99% of new born babies have perfectly normal feet – and in his clinic more than 60% of these same, shoe-wearing babies have acquired foot disabilities at six years of age. An ideal physiological shoe, the equivalent of barefootedness, would keep babies’ feet normal!

Tracy Byrne, a podiatrist specialising in podopaediatrics:

Because the feet of young children are soft and pliable, abnormal pressure can easily cause deformities. Neglecting foot health invites problems in other parts of the body, such as the legs and back.

About this project

 

Kittywinkles will be a cat lounge based in Belfast. We are aiming to create a super-relaxed zone for animal-lovers who crave hot beverages and cat hair. The lounge cats will nap or play or plot world domination and might wander onto your lap for a tum-scratch. Please obey!

What’s a cat lounge?

Cat cafés originated in Taiwan in the late ’90s, they are pretty commonplace these days but not in Ireland. We know it’s hard to find an understanding landlord who will let you keep a cat nearby in your home or under your bed. It’s a shame but that’s where we can help.

At Kittywinkles you can lounge and laze and lol amongst a few friendly cats. Sip your tea, connect to the WiFi and admire the very small, hairy mammals.

 How does it work?

2. Be super excited and tell everyone you’re going.
3. Arrive bright-eyed and fluffy-tailed.
4. Kick off your shoes and cuddle a kitty.

Who would visit Kittywinkles?

We expect to see lots of different people come through our doors when we open, humans who:

  • love cats (of course!)
  • love cats but are too busy to own one
  • love cats but aren’t allowed to have them in their homes
  • live with other humans who have cat allergies. Achoo!

Hiya! I’m Caitlin (or Kitty). I’ve always been a cat-person and you’re probably one too. Here I am, barefoot and surrounded by cats in the mid-90s, that’s the dream, isn’t it?

Not too much has changed, I still love cats, but these days I wear shoes.

Living in Belfast I found it difficult to keep pet cats at my rented accommodation and I’ve found others have experienced this, too. I first came across cat cafés 2 years ago and fell in love with the concept. It wasn’t until they started popping up in the UK that I eventually got to experience a visit for myself, which is what led me to develop my idea for Kittywinkles.

For the past 8 months I have been working on bringing this project to life. With the help of some fantastically talented buddies I’m ready to take the next step and share my plans with Kickstarter.

Timeline

If we’re successful and everything goes to plan here’s how the timeline of events will look:

  • 24th June – Kickstarter campaign comes to an end.
  • 8th July –  Final funds will be transferred to Kittywinkles.
  • Late July/August – We would hope to have the Kittywinkles space locked in, the signature on the dotted line and we can then begin the catification (i.e. fit out). 
  • Late August/Early September – We will be introducing the cat residents to the lounge and inviting kitty critics and backers to visit.
  • September – Backer visits and launch party.
  • September/October – Open to the public!

Floor plans

We have been visiting locations over the past 4 months and we’ve found some great spaces but we’re unable to make any more progress until we have funds though that hasn’t stopped us from mocking up the floor plans for our ideal space.

 

Our Kickstarter goal of £20,000 is the absolute minimum amount we need to get up and running. We have big ideas and we’ll be using every penny to make Kittywinkles amazing.

The more funds we can raise the better we’ll be able to make Kittywinkles for everyone, cats and humans alike. If we raise more than we need we can get a bigger and better space and we can do lots of fun things too:

At £25k we can create a cat utopia: kitty bridges in the sky, cat trees and lots of cool board games and books for visitors.

It just rolls off the tongue, that’s why!

Will you find all these cats in the forest?

Nope, not this time! The animal shelters in Northern Ireland do an amazing job at caring for and rehoming cats and I decided I wanted to adopt a small herd of them for myself (but I’ll share with you). Adopting an animal is a cool thing to do but if your landlord/mum/narcissistic goldfish doesn’t like the idea then you can visit the Kittywinkles’ cats whenever you like! It’s our aim to provide our cats with a happy, permanent and enriched environment.

No, iz mine.

Do you need any spare cats?

Welllll… no-but-I’d-take-them-all-if-I-could. These cats are a tight-knit gang and newcomers would have to complete a gruelling gladiator-style initiation.

But… I can pet a cat for free if I leave a trail of cat treats to my front door.

‘Course you can! But these kitties will be waiting for you AND we have FANCY TEA! The admission charge keeps these cats in fine satin robes and pedicures (and food and vet checks).

I need to pick up that cat. Discuss.

I’m on a diet and I’m not allowed to eat cat hair for 6 weeks. What else can I have?

Good news! The café area will be a strictly kitty-free zone and, hopefully, so will the bathroom.

Aren’t cats meant to be free to frolic on hillsides?

After being domesticated for 9500 years, cats are happy to live in pampered luxury. There will be loads of safe spaces in the café and the staff will be watching to make sure they’re happy and calm.

Risks and challenges

We’re confident about what lies ahead and the steps we need to take to open Kittywinkles and for it to be amazing. Finding the appropriate premises is really important and we have earmarked a few spaces that would be perfect. We’ll be exploring them further should we meet our goal.

We are also trying something new in Belfast, we don’t know how successful a cat lounge will be. Does Belfast love cats as much as we do!? We suspect, yes. We want to build something genuinely unique for our community and for our visitors.

About this project

The Book

Uneasy is a book of Chris Buck’s portraits of the famous, with 338 color and black-and-white photographs, from 1986 to 2016. For three decades Buck has been carving out a unique space in the world of celebrity portraiture, capturing its ineffability – its danger, its oddness, its warped sense of reality.

With Uneasy Chris Buck constructs a road map of contemporary culture, featuring a wide range of subjects, including actors, musicians, meme cats, hipster media moguls, community organizers, Hong Kong film directors, populist demagogues, George Bushs, discredited memoirists, pop song satirists, sex tape humiliated wrestlers, animal rights activists, Mad Men, a Beatle, self-hating comedians, TV chefs, feminist authors, Hip Hop producers, impressive yet unreadable German authors, much-loved has-been actors, fatwa-inviting authors, a Borked Judge, second-generation baseball players, fake news show anchors, tech innovators, Heavy Metal icons turned reality TV icons, suppressive persons, New York Mayors, homophobic rappers, naked performance artists, and Heisenberg.

The Foreword is a provocative piece of new writing from acclaimed author Sheila Heti, whose memoir “How a Person Should Be” was chosen as one of the best books of 2012 by The New York Times.

The Anecdote section of Uneasy features over a hundred behind-the-scenes stories by the photographer himself, with plenty of humor and surprises.

The Photographer

Chris Buck was born in Toronto in July of 1964. His father worked for Kodak, so he went into the family business and became a photographer.  Chris moved to New York in 1990 and established himself as a sought-after editorial and advertising photographer; his clients include Google, Xerox, Old Spice, Dodge, GQ, The New Yorker and The Guardian Weekend.

Buck has won multiple awards, including being the first recipient of the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize in 2007. His first book, Presence: The Invisible Portrait, published in 2012, was a collection of celebrity photos in which the famous sitters are present, but not visible. Kathy Ryan, Photo Director for The New York Times Magazine, called it a “crazy subversive book.”

He spends much of his free time with his wife Michelle and daughter Olive. He takes his martinis dry, with a twist.

The Design

The book is designed by the de.MO team of Giorgio Baravalle and Elizabeth Logan-Baravalle, who have designed books for over 50 photographers in the last 15 years, including monographs for Elliott Erwitt, Sebastião Salgado and the Seven Group. Uneasy has a clean and inventive design, with 72 works never shown before.

The Financials

Going through thirty years of work is no small feat, financially or otherwise. For the last two years Chris and his team have been sorting the archives of his full career, finding many important portraits now included in the book.

Over two hundred negatives and transparencies were drum scanned by LuxLab for Uneasy. Each was prepped by a small group of retouchers and then finalized by Chris over the course of months. For the trickier images, Chris received help from Sugar Digital out of San Francisco.

Other costs include hiring the writer for the Foreword, plus a copy editor for all text; a publicist and printed promotions for events supporting the book’s release in the fall. And, of course, commissioning a top-notch design team in de.MO.

Once the design is finalized the book will be being printed in South Korea, with multiple test proofs to insure quality. With your backing, this book will be actualized.

Statement from the Photographer

Studying photography in college, I was something of a perplexing figure to my classmates. I was perceived as having talent – so why was I focusing it on something so frivolous as pop-culture portraits?

Not surprisingly, it was the Sociology and Media teacher Murray Pomerance who asked the more psychologically probing questions. When he directly confronted me about my portrait of John Cale, the first photograph in this book, as it hung on the wall next to him, asking, “Where does this celebrity obsession come from?” I answered with a shrug and a quiet quip about “Having deep seated problems from my adolescence.”

I wasn’t able to articulate it at the time but there was some profound longing in me to connect with these anointed ones. I suspected that I would never really be able to make that connection, as I desired it, but perhaps with my camera I could carry something of them away with me.  

My long-term aim of making the celebrity portrait a graceful mix of awkward humanity and visual excitement has grown and matured to where the Uneasy book is full-on a document of that desire and longing.

Uneasy Sample Story: Carolee Schneemann

I arrived alone to Carolee’s country home in New Paltz, NY. I often asked subjects for location suggestions in their area, with low expectations, but it this case it paid off and she took us to her neighbor’s swimming pond. As we approached the edge she disrobed completely and stepped into the water. I was surprised but followed her lead (I was not sure of upstate swimming hole etiquette). Of course I was still in shoot mode so I walked around the pond fully naked carrying as much camera gear as I could.

Camera in hand I joined her in the water and we shot for a while. As we climbed out of the pond, both still undressed she looked at me and asked, “So, you have red hair in your family?”

Uneasy Sample Story: Philip Seymour Hoffman

I did three sittings with Philip Seymour Hoffman but it’s the time that I had a random lunch with him that I find myself thinking about.

Running errands on a spring Saturday I popped into a hot dog joint on Lafayette, just south of Bleecker. A minute after I placed my order at the corner Philip came in. The place was almost empty, so I went up and said hello. He recognized me right away and was friendly, if low-key.

We sat down and ate. He had a cheeseburger and I had two hot dogs wrapped in bacon, with hot sauce.

During our conversation I congratulated him on his Best Actor Oscar for “Capote”, which he had received only days before. I told him that he can’t now go off and do stupid big-budget action movies (a common misstep of past winners). He chewed his sandwich for a couple of seconds and then told me that his next picture was “Mission Impossible III.”
