HYMN: A Solo for 7: Anneke Hansen Dance premieres 6 performances of a new work at the gorgeous Irondale Theater in Brooklyn, December 2nd through 5th!

“There is a marvelously artisanal quality to Ms. Hansen’s delicately wrought choreography, which takes full account of the notion of live art as something that occurs in a shared space, through the concentrated cooperation of artists and audience members.”

 – Claudia La Rocco, The New York Times

Thank you for taking a moment to learn more about Anneke Hansen Dance’s newest project:hymn. Premiering at the beautiful Irondale Center in Brooklyn, NY, December 2nd – 5th, 2015,hymn is the company’s most ambitious work to date, and we need your help to make it a reality!

hymn is an evening-length dance choreographed by Anneke Hansen. Conceived as a solo, it will be performed by two women and five men. hymn examines devotional acts of physical labor, the unifying commonality of the human form, how the ideas of dissolution and continuance converse, and the ways in which committed effort can amount to the raising of praise. “Womanly” movement vocabulary is transposed to “manly” canvases, and constant abstract action is juxtaposed by more mercurial and poetic dancing. hymn is an exploration of female strength and power, and of masculine sensitivity and sensuousness.

This August, AHD was in residence at Universidad de las Americas Pueblas, working on hymn. This incredibly productive and rich residency was vital to the progress of this work. With the luxury of a studio to call our own, we were able to devote time to exploring this new work, specifically its central costume piece, a massive skirt, 35 feet in diameter. This skirt, both costume and set piece, has allowed me to confront ideas I hold about the historical presentation of the female form, my assumptions about how dance is made, and the reach and definition of dance technique.

This work is ambitious, representing both a deepening of long-held artistic concerns, and a new way of working for AHD. Work of this scale is expensive to create—in order to produce the show, pay all the performers and collaborators, and fully realize this project, we need to raise a total of $39,000. We’ve already raised a portion of this, and now we’re launching this Kickstarter campaign to raise $3,000 of the remainder. Will you become a backer and help bring this work to life?

hymn has been created with an outstanding group of artists:

Dancers Ezra Goh, Anneke Hansen, Samuel Hanson, Belinda He (rehearsal direction/dramaturgy), Russell Stuart Lilie, Austin Selden, and Chafin Seymour, costumes byBaille Younkman, sound design and music by Nick Yulman, lighting design by Ariel Pierce, and video and photography by Matt Harvey.
