BRNO, Czech Republic, November 23, 2015 – 3Dim Laboratory announced that it is launching a new crowdfunding campaign with IndieGoGo to support development of 3D printing software called 3DimMaker which will be open sourced if the campaign succeeds.
3DimMaker allows you to generate G-code (instructions for 3D printers) from imported 3D models while it benefits from its own robust slicer to generate G-code. The slicer was written as a comprehensive solution to thin parts and supports so the slicer can process models which other slicers are unable to handle properly.
“We started developing 3DimMaker almost 2 years ago, motivated by 3D printer producers’ needs and our own experience with 3D printing of complex shapes like human tissues for medical treatment planning. The printing results and quality were not satisfying. So our main goal was to develop a reliable 3D printing instrument for FDM printing of large models with difficult shape, many thin parts and potential errors in the surface definition.” said Premysl Krsek, Co-founder and CEO of 3Dim Laboratory.
The slicer also introduces a new type of tree-like supports to reduce the printing time and save material and it further optimizes the generated G-code for higher printing speed – moves, retracts, etc.
“By going open source, we are trying to push ahead with 3DimMaker development and bring new exciting ideas through the open source community. Another reason is the positive experience we enjoyed with 3DimViewer, our other OSS project. And we also believe that the industry can benefit from OSS and should also be returning something to the OSS community.” said Michal Spanel, Co-founder and Head of Software Development of 3Dim Laboratory.
