I grew up the son of a marketing professor moving to various locations on the east coast, ultimately settling in Wilkes-Barre, PA. While there, my entrepreneurial spirit budded with the organization of 14 teens working together over the course of 4 years to create a collectible tradable card game in the same vein as Magic: The Gathering. In 2007, I moved to Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in film and video production, which I received in 2009. While in Pittsburgh, I started 3 businesses- Steel City Movers LLC in 2008, GoFigure! Custom Action Figures in 2014, and Bryan Ghingold Consulting, a firm that helps people start their own small businesses, in 2015. I briefly moved to Los Angeles, CA from 2011-2012 but returned to focus on the growth of the moving company.
Steel City Movers LLC is a fully insured Pittsburgh-based moving labor company that has been operating in Allegheny County for over seven years. As a company we strive to provide the best quality service in the moving labor field, combining years of experience with modern flexibility to deliver the most in-demand services to our customers when and where they need them. Our biggest challenge has been applying for our Public Utilities Commission (PUC) license so we can offer truck driving services to our clients. We are at the tail end of that application and hope to offer commercial driving services in 2016. Once we are issued our PUC license, we will be applying for our Interstate Common Carrier (ICC) license to allow us to perform moves nationwide.
As part of the PUC application process, we had to purchase additional insurances Steel City Movers did not already carry as well as increase the limits of our existing policies. This was coupled with an unfortunate provision unique to Pennsylvania- the PUC would not allow us to provisionally operate while we are in the application period. Our past 7 months of revenues have suffered dramatically and we have had to turn away business paradoxically and ironically in order to qualify us to grow as a business. With a Kiva loan, we can more easily afford our insurance policies which will allow us to continue to operate and grow and (re)grow our business, once licensed by the PUC and DOT.
