The 6th Annual NYC Real Estate Expo & 1st Annual NYC Tech Expo will be held at Hilton in Midtown, 1335 Avenue of the Americas from 7am to 4:30pm. It will be attended by an estimated 3,500 leaders in the real estate industry, and more than 180 companies will participate in the exposition.

No more soggy crust!  Start-up company seeks funding on Kickstarter to bring its Microwave Pizza Pan to market.

Phoenix, AZ., (October 12, 2015) – Reheatza, LLC., has launched a 37-day Kickstarter campaign to help fund manufacturing for a Microwave Pizza Pan that can reheat pizza and a variety of other foods.  The Pan works by heating food from the bottom much like a frying pan, while blocking microwave energy from the top and preventing the top of the food from rapidly overcooking in a microwave oven.

Two entrepreneurs, Joe Kanefsky and Boyd Palmer, were annoyed with the quality and taste of reheated pizza from the microwave.  “We challenged ourselves to see if we could create a product that could return leftover pizza back to the oven-baked consistency with a crispy crust and moist toppings. Our objective was to bring a quality product to the public. We had multiple opportunities to produce a cheaper ‘as-seen-on-TV’ style product, be we believe consumers will be willing to pay more for a more durable, longer-lasting product” said co-founder and CEO, Joe Kanefsky.

In the United States alone, pizza is a sixty billion dollar-per-year industry. Reheatza, LLC believes they have a product which can greatly improve the taste, texture, and quality of leftover and frozen pizza, as well as many other food items in the microwave.

The company was founded in 2011 after two long-time colleagues started working on a concept on how to prevent the typical soggy and chewy crust that resulted from microwaving leftover pizza. After going through several iterations of design ideas and prototypes, they now have a product that simultaneously heats from the bottom by absorbing microwave energy while blocking the same harsh microwaves from reaching the top of the pizza, or other food item.

During the duration of the campaign, the owners of Reheatza, LLC will be working with an engineering firm in Livermore, CA to finalize the overall design of the Reheatza lid; adding additional space to accommodate taller foods like deep-dish pizza, and working to increase the material thickness of the lid to ensure durability.

The company hopes to raise at least $47,500 from Kickstarter backers to help finalize the design of the pan and begin manufacturing.

Indiegogo equity crowdfunding – the challenges

A lot has been said about Indiegogo allowing people to invest directly in the projects via equity crowdfunding. Since early 2015 we have seen news about it in several major news outlets. Now, approaching the end of the year and four months after JOBS Act Title IV (Regulation A+) was enabled, nothing happened yet.

There are even some analysts claiming both Indiegogo and Kickstarter might not go equity, but it’s too early to say so. Most probably, the delay is caused by some challenges that must be circumvented before allowing equity crowdfunding through their platforms.

The type of individual who would invest in a company expecting a future profit is remarkably different of that one that would put his money to get a product months later. The latter comprises most of Indiegogo community, but there is a genuine demand for equity crowdfunding in the platform, as it is not rare to see people asking how can they invest in successful campaign pages.

Equity crowdfunding is a different beast

Based on the community question, it seems logical for Indiegogo to allow equity crowdfunding through its platform. However, the way the platform has to operate on this is totally different of rewards based types in the way a campaign can run.

The reason is simple: rewards based crowdfunding is open to everyone. Anyone can go to the platform, enter his credit card and “invest” in the company in return for a future gadget. No questions asked, no need to prove anything.

The same does not happen to equity crowdfunding. While Title IV allowed everyone to participate, there are clear rules for both accredited and non-accredited investors, as well as the amount each company and project can raise per year. That means there is a lot of paperwork that both the crowdfunder and the platform must deal with. They have to scrutiny over the company and each and every investor of any campaign.

Plus, the amount that can be invested by each particular person can vary from a couple hundreds to tens of thousands per project. Frauds on larger sums would certainly hurt both the investor and the platform, so everything has to be planned wisely.

What is the status?

We have raised just some of the difficulties that a consolidated platform like Indiegogo would come across if they were to accept equity crowdfunding through their platform. They are certainly bigger given the scale of the site.

While we don’t have a schedule, people from inside Indiegogo have praised Title IV when it came up. So they are probably working on it. Equity on Indiegogo looks to be a matter of when, not if.
